We keep an eye on what’s happening in the cybersecurity world so you don’t have to. Here’s a recap of what we considered the highlights from last month.

Almost half of all critical manufacturing across the globe faces a significant risk of a data breach, according to a recent report released at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The report indicates 48% of critical manufacturing providers in the key sectors as designated by the U.S. government, were rated C or below for cyber resilience, making them more vulnerable to malicious activity.

The Cloud Security and Compliance Series (CS2) is an ongoing informational series for contractors in the Defense Industrial Base. These events are specifically curated towards aerospace, defense contractors, and higher education institutions looking for practical approaches to address security threats, expand a culture of cybersecurity within their organization, and gain insights into cloud investment best practices. MARS Suite is a sponsor of CS2 and will be scheduling private meetings with organizations at the Huntsville, AL event March 7-8.

Security software vendors have been implementing machine learning and embedding AI into products for years. This evolution has led to improved threat detection and training opportunities, but the emergence of newer technologies and platforms such as DALL-E and ChatGPT have created a tsunami of new threats and risks. Many believe that ChatGPT has already been behind recent cyber-attacks. Box CEO Aaron Levie believes we are dealing with the ‘perfect storm’ of challenges in cybersecurity, especially when it comes to platforms like ChatGPT. “These are very, very complicated, dynamic, chaotic times on the security front,” Aaron Levie said.

Since June 2021, Hive has targeted more than 1,500 victims globally, including disrupting health care providers during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Victims paid more than $100 million in ransom to the group, which attacked a U.S. victim in Florida as recently as 15 days ago, according to Attorney General Merrick Garland.

Taking a page out of the World War II history books, China launched a high-altitude surveillance balloon that is currently in U.S. airspace. North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command continue to closely track a Chinese high-altitude balloon — which is “maneuverable” and moving eastward over the continental United States at an altitude around 60,000 feet, Pentagon Press Secretary Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said Friday.

Software Companies, Code Repository Service Providers Breached

LastPass, Okta, Github, Rackspace, CircleCI, DNV NortonLifeLock have all reported data breaches over the last few of months. These data breaches prove that cyber criminals, enemies of the U.S. and hackers are targeting software companies, their source code, and cloud service providers. With a growing number of attacks and data breaches being announced by top global technology providers, it is imperative to deploy continuous vulnerability scanning, alerting, monitoring, and incident response capabilities within your organization.

The next version of MARS Suite is currently being beta tested and will be ready for release soon! As part of the new platform launch, we are rolling out new rebate and incentive programs that can be used to fund your cyber and compliance programs. Contact MARS Suite today to learn more!
